Misericordia University entered this afternoon's PAC Lacrosse game averaging a league-high 15.6 goals per game. The Eastern University women's lacrosse team shut down the Cougar attack and used an 11-0 first half to secure a 16-4 home win. Grace Griffith led all scorers with six goals and a pair of assists.
The Eagles scored a pair of goals in the third minute of the game to take a quick 2-0 lead. Jess Field put away a free position shot to open the scoring. Just second later, Maguire set up Griffith in front of the cage to double the advantage. Five minutes later, Lindsay Moosey drew a charge deep in the Eastern defensive area. The speedy freshman defender took the four yard head start and raced end-to-end for her third tally of the year.
Erin Fries tucked away her 17th of the year in the 11th minute on a pass from Katie Choquette behind the cage. Grifftith and Choquette then converted free position shots to bump the advantage to 6-0. Griffith converted both her free position shots on the day.
Griffith scored a pair of unassisted goals within a minute and a half of each other to bump the advantage to 8-0/. Meanwhile, the Eastern defense forced the visiting Cougars into 22 first-half turnovers and allowed just four shots in the opening half. Moosey was credited with five caused turnovers and Linnea Davis picked up a game-high six ground balls.
Anne Dietrich scored a on a great look from Liza O'Keefe with 4:19 left in the period. O'Keefe took a pass from Maguire for her first of two goals on the day. Field then ended the scoring for the half with a fast break goal in the closing seconds. Kim Campbell made a pair of first half saves. Allison Hoffer made 13 of her 19 saves in the first half for the Cougars.
The Eastern defense continued to slow the Misericordia attack throughout he second half. Choquette and O'Keefe each picked up their second goals in the second half. Griffith picked up a pair goals and a pair of assists in the second half. The second of her assists set up Maguire for a beautiful goal off the right side.
Coach Azzarano said of the game. "I am really pleased with the way we are coming together on the attack, and our defense was very good today. We are seeing players really step up and do great things in this stretch of games."
The Eagles (10-4 7-1 PAC) will travel to Neumann College on Monday afternoon for another important PAC contest.
Tiffany Snyder relieved Campbell in goal for the for the second half.
