April 11: Softball Takes Second Game for Split

Ashley Lewis is in school all day. The senior pitcher and student-teacher gave a few lessons on the softball field in the nightcap of today's doubleheader against Neumann College. She scattered seven hits and allowed just one run while knocking in four on a three-run home run and an RBI single in a 5-1 win.

The Eagles needed the win in game two to earn the split after Angelo Sebasto struck-out 11 Eastern batters to earn a 4-1 win in the opener. Both teams scored in the first inning of the opening game, but Neumann picked up the go-ahead run in the fourth and then tacked on a pair in the fifth. The Eagles threatened with the bases loaded and a single out in the sixth, but Sebasto escaped the jam, and the Eagles went quietly.

Megan Favazza went 2-3 with a run scored in the opener. She looked to get things going in the first inning of game two when she pounded one of her two doubles in the nightcap. The Eagles could not bring her home, and Neumann responded with a run in the top of the second. The inning could have been worse as Lewis faced a bases-loaded jam with one out and one run scored. Not rattled, Lewis induced a soft line-drive to the mound and a strikeout to escape the jam.

Eastern picked up the tying run in the third on an unearned run when Amy Bellows scored on a throwing error. The Knights put runners on second and third in the fourth, but Lewis again escaped without harm.

Lewis delivered the big blow of the day with a three-run shot to left center in the bottom of the fourth. The home run is her second of the year. The senior then escaped another jam in the sixth with the help of a well-executed 5-3 double play.

Lewis delivered again in the sixth with a bases-loaded single to drive in Karen Hertzog. Lewis allowed a double in the bottom of the seventh, but earned the win with a pair of high fly balls to Favazza in right.

The split moves the Eagles to 5-5 in conference play. They will return to action, weather permitting, with a 1:00 pm home doubleheader against Rosemont.
