game, the Eagles used defense and pitching to avenge an earlier loss to Rockford College by a 2-1 score. In the second game of the day, Kristine Rosko picked up her second win of the season, but the Eastern bats were the story as a pair of first year players connected for home runs in a 5-1 win over Dominican.
In the 9:00 am game, Alyssa Brubaker opened the Eastern 1st inning when she reached on an error and stole second. After a solid sacrifice bunt from Megan Favazza moved her along, Brubaker scored on Tanya Guthrie's single to give the Eagles an early 1-0 lead.
Raychel Weis worked her way out of two two-on situations in the first two innings. In the third, the Regents loaded the bases with no-one out, but a clutch double play and a fly out limited Rockford to just the tying run. The Eagles responded in their half of the third with a lead off single from Brubaker. After another solid sacrifice from Favazza, Karen Hertzog punched a single into the outfield to plate Brubaker with the eventual game winner.
The Regents again put two runners on the fourth, but Weis helped herself with a 1-3 double play to end the inning. Weis completed the game without a 1-2-3 inning, but surrendered just the single unearned run to earn her first win of the year. Guthrie threw out a would be base stealer to end the game. Brubaker made the tag, but took a nasty cut that required stitches to close.
The Eagles faced Domincan College for the first time in the 1:00 game. Playing without Brubaker, the catalyst at the top of the line-up and the regular shortstop, the Eagles had to find a different key to the offense. Favazza connected for her first collegiate home run to score a pair of runs in the third inning.
Rosko continued to show good command as she struck out six and walked just one to earn her second win of the year. Her run of shutout innings stopped at thirteen as Dominican scored a seventh inning run.
The Eagles went quietly in the fourth, and Rosko got some defensive help in the bottom half of the inning as the Eagles turned their third double play of the day when Karen Hertzog doubled off a straying runner at second after a nice catch in center.
The Eagles gave Rosko a bigger cushion with three runs in the bottom of the fourth. Tanya Guthrie connected for her first collegiate home run to drive in the second and third runs of the frame.Â
The Eagles return to action for two more games tomorrow before flying home.
