March 15: Softball Splits Cabrini Twin Bill

but the visiting Cavaliers used a pair of unearned runs int he top of the seventh to steal back game two and earn the split in a key early-season match-up in the PAC. Ashley Lewis reached base five times with a home run and a double while picking up the win in game one.

In game one, the Cavaliers jumped on Lewis early when second baseman Kristie Sandefur drilled a second-inning home run. The Cavaliers then scored again in the second to take a two run lead. Lewis would allow just two hits the rest of the way.

The Eastern attack began to chip away in the bottom of the second with a single run. Alyssa Brubaker knotted the score at two in the fourth with a sacrifice fly to left to score Val Hefline. Tanya Guthrie led off the Eastern fifth with a home run to left center. Lewis then homered to nearly the same spot in the next at bat.

Lewis pitched out of a two-on situation in the top of the sixth and cruised through the seventh for her first win of the year.

The Cavaliers scratched out a pair of unearned runs in the first inning of the second game. The Eagles struck back in the third when third baseman Amy Bellows reached on a one-out walk. Brubaker ripped a single to left that rolled under the charging left-fielders glove and all the way to the fence. Bellows raced around to score on the play. Brubaker finished the inning standing at second.

Lewis sparked the Eastern fourth with a one-out rope down the left field line for her second extra-base hit of the day. Karen Hertzog reached on an error and Lewis made it to third. After Heffline reached on a fielder's choice, Carly Rawlings knocked a solid single to left. Lewis scored the tying run, but a great throw from left caught Hertzog at the plate for the second out of the inning.

The Eagles struck for two more in the top of the sixth, with Bellows delivering the key blow on a two-out single two score both runs. The Cavaliers answered with two runs in the top of the seventh. They scored both runs and had a runner on second before the Eagles had registered an out, but Raychel Weis made several great pitches to get out of the inning without further damage. The Eagles were unable to score in the seventh or eighth.

Cabrini scored a single run with aggressive base-running in the ninth, and the Eagles rally in the bottom of the inning ended with two runners on. Weis did not allow an earned run in a tough-luck loss. Cheri Johns gave up two earned runs in nine innings to earn the win for Cabrini.

The Eagles return to action Tuesday at Philadelphia Biblical University.
