Eastern University Women's Soccer completed their unbeaten run through their inaugural season in the Freedom Conference with a hard-fought 2-0 win at Misericordia University. The Eagles (12-5 8-0) earned their tenth shutout of the year.
The Eagles controlled much of the play early, but it was not until the final minute of the period when Katie Ruth curled a ball up the left sideline in front of Ashley Hackman. The senior All-America pushed the ball into the box and fought off a tackle before tucking her second touch past a hard-charging goalkeeper for her team-best 12th goal of the year.
The Eagles continued to press the Cougar goal at the start of the second half. Just seconds in, it looked as though Hackman had earned her second of the day, but the assistant referee held her flag to indicate an offside violation. Eastern attackers were called offside a season-high eight times for the match.
In the fifty-eighth minute of the match, Hackman hit the crossbar with a shot from inside the box. Jill DiRenzo gathered the rebound and pushed her shot into the inside of the post. Eastern would hit the woodwork four times on the day, but the game remained at 1-0 until the 87th minute.
First year forward Tess Beckwith's shot from 18 yards out hit the underside of the crossbar and bounced in for the important insurance goal. DiRenzo set up the play with a pass from the left side. Amanda Daveler made a pair of saves in goal to earn the shutout.
Eastern Head Coach Dan Mouw said of the game, "Misericordia made things difficult for us today. We struggled a little bit with our timing going forward, but I thought that we did well to limit their attacking chances. It will be good to return home for the playoffs."
The Eagles will host a Freedom Conference Semifinal on Wednesday afternoon. They will play the winner of the first round game between Wilkes University and DeSales University.
