Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

Volleyball rolls past Widener and York

The scary thing is, they seem to be getting better. Eastern University Volleyball, ranked #24 in the AVCA National Poll, rolled through a pair of quality non-conference opponents in home action on Saturday. Eastern beat both York College and Widener University in three sets to improve to 26-1.

Earlier in the year, York extended the Eagles to five sets in the Championship game of York's Tournament. In that game, the young Eagles won the opening two sets, but faltered in the next two. Today, the Eastern team did not let up at all. The 17-12 Spartans were unable to slow the Eastern attack. Courtney Reinhold (15 kills) and Kara Hildebrand (10 kills) led the attack in a match that seemed geared toward the outside hitters.

Maria Horning dished out 33 assists and Nikki Kummerer picked up 14 digs. The Eagles steadied their serve receive and finished with a .571 hitting percentage in the third set. Eastern leads all of Division III in hitting percentage. They hit .330 for the match.

The second match of the day pitted the Eagles against an opponent from the Commonwealth Conference. At 24-7, Widener had already secured a berth in their league playoffs. Eastern stepped up their presence at the net as they recorded 10 total blocks against the Pride. Nicole Burns led the way with six block assists.

Horning was able to use her middles more in the second game of the day. Mandy Platt (9 kills) and Burns (7 kills) each provided several big kills as the Eagles rolled to 25-20, 25-11, 25-14 wins. When in trouble, Horning was still able to find Reinhold for 13 kills. Reinhold hit .407 in the second match of the day.

The Eagles, who have dropped just nine sets in their 27 matches this year,  finish Freedom Conference regular season play with a 7:00 pm home game against King's College this Wednesday evening.
