Eastern University Volleyball improved to 23-1 with an efficient three-set home win over Alvernia University this evening. Kara Hildebrand led the way for the Eagles with a 10 kill effort.
Eastern, ranked 24th in the most recent AVCA National DIII poll, continued to hit a good percentage. With solid passing from the players behind her, Maria Horning was able to use all her options in the Eastern attack. The first year setter finished with 31 assists and the Eagles, who lead the nation in hitting percentage, hit over .300 again.
Eastern earned a 25-13 win in the first set, and cruised to a 25-9 win in the second. Courtney Reinhold put down six kills and added a pair of aces before taking the third set off. Eastern's middles both saw several hitting opportunities as Mandy Platt and Nicole Burns put away seven and six kills respectively. Burns added three solo blocks as the Eastern defense kept the visiting Crusaders from getting anything going in the attack.
As a team, the Eagles were able to put pressure on the visitors with aggressive serving. Seven Eastern players were credited with aces, and the Eastern attack gained as Alvernia struggled to mount an attack.
The Eagles return to action when they travel to DeSales to take on the 2007 Freedom Conference Champion Bulldogs. DeSales, the pre-season favorite, sits at 5-1 in the league.
