Field Hockey Wins in Freedom Debut

Eastern University Field Hockey began play in the first Freedom Conference with a home game today. The Eagles started things in a good way as they jumped to a 2-0 lead in the opening two minutes of play and held on for a decisive 6-1 win over DeSales University. Lindsay Moyer led the way with two goals and an assist.

Moyer, a 1st Team All-Region selection last year, scored her first goal just 53 seconds into the contest. Elya Troup found the junior midfielder in the circle, and Moyer calmly slid the ball to the far post for her seventh strike of the season. Twenty-seven seconds later, Eastern freshman Yvonne Herbster carried the ball into the circle and tucked home her fourth goal of the year to double the Eagles advantage.

DeSales held a good amount of the ball over the next few minutes, but the Eagles picked up their third goal of the match in transition as Herbster broke away and fed Kim Campbell in front. Campbell slammed in her team-high ninth tally of the year. Moyer set up the the fourth goal of the first half with a strong hit from outside the circle that Troup redirected from five feet out.

Christin Haas put away a Campbell pass with just over two minutes to play to give the Eagles a safe 5-0 lead at the break. The Eagles took good advantage of their first-half chances as they scored on five of their six shots. DeSales held a 3-0 advantage in penalty corners, but the Eastern defense was up to the task and kept the slate clean at the break.

DeSales got on the board with just over six minutes to play in the game on an unassisted strike from Catherine McGrillen. Moyer answered four minutes later on a penalty corner goal. Kelly Hermann and Laura Ressler split time in the Eastern goal.

The Eagles return to non-conference action for one final game against a nationally ranked non-league opponent at Rowan this Saturday. That game is scheduled for noon.
