Eastern University Women's Soccer improved to 4-0 in the conference with a 1-0 win at FDU-Florham. Jill DiRenzo's goal in the fifteenth minute proved to be the difference as Amanda Daveler and the Eastern back line kept the Devils off the board.
Everything about the game was tight. Used to the spacious turf of Olson Field, the Eagles had to adapt to a FDU's
smallish grass field and very intentional defending from their hosts.
While Eastern held a 7-1 advantage in shots in the first half, the most
effective shot of the half was hardly a shot at all. After an FDU foul,
Ashley Hackman slotted the restart through for Kara Neef on the left side. Neef drilled a strong cross that DiRenzo met with her hip at the near post. The velocity of Neef's cross and the timing of DiRenzo's run produced enough momentum to probel the ball into the back of the net for the eventual game-winner. The goal is DiRenzo's eighth of the year.
The
Eagles had several chances to stretch their advantage in the first
half, but the Devils stood their ground and kept the deficit at one.
Eastern saw several other chances slip away in the second half. Early
in the half, DiRenzo curled a high ball from the flanks that looked to be headed for Hackman on the back post, but the lofted ball got lost in the sun and the chance was lost.
Later in the half, DiRenzo found Hackman at the top of the box with a clever heel pass. Hackman ripped a shot that curled just wide of the upper corner. Another close chance went unfinished after Hackman
slotted a ball behind the FDU defense for Kristin Watson. Watson's
early serve slipped just out of reach of a pair of Eastern forwards,
and rolled harmlessly across the face of the goal.
Hackman
volleyed a Corie Brant cross in the waning moments of the match, but
Lauren Albrecht made a solid save in goal for the hosts, and FDU kept
their hopes alive. Meanwhile, the Eastern back line remained composed
and limited the Devils' chances throughout. Daveler managed her box well and made three second half saves on shots from distance to preserve the shutout.
Eastern Head Coach Dan Mouw
said of the day, "I think we have to look at road wins as good wins.
Our defending core was very solid again today. We would have liked to
have finished at a higher rate, but I was really impressed with their
vision on the restart goal."
The win is the third 1-0 win of the year for the Eagles, who improve to 8-5 after an 0-3 start.
With the win, the Eagles remained tied at the top of the Freedom Conference with DeSales University. Eastern will host Alvernia University on Tuesday afternoon at 3:30. That time is moved up one half hour from the original start time.
