team. The Eagles jumped to a 22-17 halftime lead, but were unable to convert second half chances and fell 39-38.
The first half saw both teams struggle from the field, but Jeriah Garton and Hannah Tobin did the work on the boards to stake the Eagles to a halftime lead. Garton pulled down six first half rebounds. Tobin ripped down four boards and led all scorers at the break with eight points. Patrice Freeman scored seven straight points for the Eagles to help Eastern to erase a five point deficit early and gain momentum with the score tied at 13.
The Lions jumped out with five straight points to tie the game, but the Eagles regained the lead and forged a seven point lead at 35-28 on a Freeman jumper with just under ten minutes to play. The Lions tightened the defense and held the Eagles to a single field goal over the final nine and half minutes of the game to secure the 39-38 win.
Eastern Coach Katie Levis said of her team's performance. "I was very pleased with our defensive effort and our work on the boards. Jeriah had seven blocks and double figure rebounds, and Hannah was very active on the boards. That part of the game and our effort looked good. We will have to shoot better to be successful." The Eagles shot just 25% from the field for the game and only 22% in the second half.
The Eagles return to action at home on Saturday with a 1:00 game against Centenary College.
