The Johns Hopkins Blue Jays Held Eastern Men's Basketball to just 30 percent shooting in the second half to preserve a 71-62 win. Joe Manzo led the Eagles with 16 points.
Hopkins used a 16-5 run to break open an 18-18 game and ultimately seize a 38-29 halftime advantage. They then opened the second half with a 6-1 run to take their largest lead of the game at 44-30. It seemed that the Blue Jays were in command, but the Eagles clawed their way back into the game. Two straight lay-ups from senior guard David Volpe cut the Hopkins lead to single digits at 46-38, and the Eastern squad started to shows signs of life.
Over the next ten minutes, Eastern ran into the six point barrier with great consistency. Every time they would cut the deficit to six, Hopkins would make a trip to the free throw line, answer with a basket, or come up with a key defensive stop to keep the Eagles at bay. A big dunk in traffic from Mike Johnson with four and a half minutes to go in the game again cut the Hopkins lead to six at 59-53.
This time, the Eagles were able to force a turnover, and Matt Flanagan hit a floating jumper to give the Eagles more life. Hopkins answered with a basket. A moving screen call gave the Jays the ball back with two and a half minutes to play. Johnson again made a play with a steal on the wing, and the Eagles were able to cut the deficit to 61-57 on a pair of Manzo free throws.
Forced to foul, the Eagles were never able to cut further into the lead as the Blue Jays connected on 10-12 free throws down the stretch. Volpe joined Manzo in double figures with 11 points.
Eastern struggled shooting the ball on the afternoon. They connected on just 2-12 three-point attempts and 12-19 free throws while shooting just over 41% from the field.
Manzo earned a spot on the All-Tournament team. Eastern returns to action Thursday night at Messiah College.
