at 17-15 with just over seven minutes to play, it looked as though the Eagles might hold on and make a second half run at their visitors from Cabrini. Their guests, however had other ideas. The Cavaliers closed out the half on a 23-7 run to claim an 18 point lead at the intermission. They steadily built their lead through the second half to finish with an 82-51 win.
Steady shooting, 12 offensive rebounds, and good transition offense keyed the Cabrini attack in the second period. The deeper Cavaliers won the rebounding battle 57-37 and held the Eagles to just 31% shooting for the game. Thirteen different players scored for the Cavaliers who shared the ball with 24 assists on their 31 baskets.
The Eagles, who due to injuries played with a rotation of six players, were unable to continue their solid start as fatigue took its toll. Patrice Freeman led the way with a team-high 15 points, eight rebounds, and five assists. Hannah Tobin continued her run of double-digit scoring efforts with a 14 point and nine rebound effort.
First-year head coach Katie Levis saw some positive in the team's opening against the more experienced Cabrini team. She said, "They are going to compete for a PAC Championship. We are not there now, but I was pleased with the way we started the game and with a lot of the steps we are taking as a team to take better care of the basketball."
The Eagles committed just 17 turnovers against a tough Cabrini defense. The Cavaliers were led by Kate Walck with 18 points on 6-7 shooting with five three-pointers. Brittany McLeod and Kayleen Smith also hit double-figures for the guests with twelve and ten respectively.
The Eagles are off until Saturday when they travel to Misericordia University for a 1:00 pm game with the Cougars.
