Eastern UniversityMen's Soccer used a second-half goal from first year forward Dann DeLorenzo to pull away from the Villa Julie Mustangs in the opening game of the Rutgers-Camden Cialella Classic.
The Eagles carried much of the possession and created several chances in the opening frame, but six shots and four corner kicks did not produce a goal. Senior goalkeeper Noah Bartelt made just a single save in the opening frame as the Eastern back line kept the ball in the attacking end. Villa Julie's Eric Lowman made three of his eight saves in the first half. The Eagles best chance of the first half came on a set piece near the top of the box. Sophomore forward Brian Raffle picked up a rebound on the original shot, but Lowman was able to redirect Raffle's shot wide for a corner.
The Eastern coaching staff played 20 players on the evening, and the depth of the Eagles began to take its toll as the second half action began to swing even more in favor of the Eagles. With 22 minutes remaining in the half, Scott Patrick cut a beautiful serve in from the left side that fellow junior Ryan Castle got to and hit over the bar. Moments later, Patrick set up the eventual game-winner as he carried the ball through the center seam and drew the last defender before playing the ball left to DeLorenzo. The crafty winger raced onto the ball and buried his shot in the upper right side of the net.
Coach Wagner said of the game, "We made some tactical changes that helped us to create better chances in the second half. We need to do a better job finishing those as we go through the rest of the year."
The Eagles had several more chances to double their advantage, including a shot off the bar from DeLorenzo with five minutes to go, but the Eastern defense held strong in front of Michael Dorsch. The Mustangs forced Dorsch to make a pair of saves in the second half. For the match, the Eagles outshot Villa Julie 16-5.
Men's soccer returns to action at the base of the Ben Franklin Bridge tomorrow night at 7:00 against Rutgers-Camden.
