Men's Soccer Settles for Draw at Gwynedd-Mercy

Eastern University Men's Soccer settled for a 1-1 draw at Gwynedd-Mercy College in a game with PAC ramifications. Aaron Tritch scored the lone goal for the Eagles.

With the Griffins entering without a league win, and the Eagles as the preseason favorites, it appeared that the game should have been the Eastern's to take. Things started out well for the Eagles as Aaron Tritch finished a Bryce Plummer serve in the 22nd minute. Eastern continued to press and several times looked as though they were going to stretch the advantage to 2-0, but the Eagles could only get three shot on frame in the opening period, and Griffin goalkeeper Joe Schnieder managed his box well to keep the Eagles at bay.

A loss of possession deep in the Eastern end led to Gwynedd-Mercy's equalizing effort in the 40th minute. Joe Chilutti scored the goal for the Griffins.

Eastern started the second half with great intensity going forward and seemed to create chances almost at will, but were unable to beat Schneider, who made six saves in the second half and two in each overtime to preserve the tie. The Eagles best chance of the second half came in the waning seconds as Brian Raffle served a ball into the box that found Kyle Hurst on the doorstep. Schneider turned away the shot just before the horn went off to end regulation.

The first overtime period saw the Eagles pressing forward again, and a restart opportunity from the left looked as though it would break the knot, but Ryan Castle's serve to the near post went unfinished, and the Eagles would have to settle for a draw. The tie drops the Eagles to 6-2-1 overall and 2-1-1 in the PAC.

Eastern returns to action Wednesday with a home game against Richard Stockton College.
