The visiting William Paterson University Pioneers opened up a 3-0 lead and then withstood a strong late push to hold on for a 3-1 non-conference victory.
Chelsea Winkelspecht put her mark on the game early for the visitors when she stole a ball deep in the Eastern end and scored an unassisted goal in the sixteenth minute. Just over five minutes later, the Pioneers took advantage of another bouncing ball in the circle as Christina Ayusa jammed a ball in from close range for a 2-0 lead.
The Eagles came out with more fire in the second half, but the Pioneers engineered another goal five minutes in on an Amber Scott finish of a Winkelspecht pass.
From that point on, the Eagles began to press forward to create chances. the Eastern pressure paid off when Kim Campbell pushed her second goal of the year in to cut into the William Paterson lead.
The Eagles looked to have a golden chance to further cut into the advantage with a penalty stroke with nine minutes to play. Winkelspecht stepped off the field briefly to don goalkeeper apparel and proceeded to make a diving save on a well-struck stroke headed toward the corner.
The Eagles, now 6-3 on the year, return to action Saturday at Cedar Crest College.
