Eastern had beaten the Knights handily in three games just last week, and yet there was a sense of uneasiness going into the Championship game. Neumann improved their execution in every facet of the game and emerged with a hard fought 4 game win.
The Knights won the first game 30-25. A late run of points on Mandy Platt's serve started to shift momentum back toward the Eagles, but Neumann was able to side out to close out the game.
The Eagles bounced back with a 30-28 win in game two. Eastern hit .245 in the second game, which was a big improvement over the first game, but still Neumann was able to keep the Eagles out of offense. In a play indicative of the effort put forth by the Knight's on the evening, Libero Meghan Wilson flew into the bleachers after a mishandled pass and was unable to return. her replacement for the game in the Libero role, Cathleen Hazewski wound up as the MVP of the contest for the Knights.
Gmae three saw the Eagles jump to an early lead, but Neumann refused to bow to the early run and stormed back to take the game 30-24. The Knights hit .333 for the second game and were in offense a much greater percentage of the time.
Eastern earned the first five points of the fourth game and looked to be rolling, but Neumann again stormed back to take the lead. The Eagles were able to fight off several match points with big kills and clutch passing from Emma Klein and Katie Ressler, but Neumann's Julia Tarlowski put down her match-high 17th kill of the night to break Eastern's string of Championships with 36-34 win.
Klein and Ressler each had 12 kills on the evening for the Eagles. Klein finishes her career at Eastern as the only Eastern University Volleyball player to amass more than 1400 kills and 1400 digs in a career.Â
