Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Clark's Late Equalizer Helps Eagles Advance

The Ducks had ousted the Eagles in 2005, but this year the Eagles were able to best their nationally ranked hosts in penalty kicks. Junior Captain Alex Clark provided the heroics with an 85th minute goal to give the Eagles a chance in extra time.

The Eagles had the lion's share of possession in the second half, and looked several times to be near an equalizer, but the Stevens defense held the Eastern rally off until Clark's strike. The eagles put the Ducks under continuous and relentless pressure while firing 11 shots to their host's 3 in the second half.

Clark collected a loose ball outside the box and hit a screaming left footed volley that kissed the underside of the crossbar on it's way in for the equalizer. When asked about the goal, Clark responded frankly, "It was pretty much the greatest goal I've ever scored. That it came at such an important moment was really great."

Stevens jumped on the board in the thirteenth minute and looked to be fairly content in holding onto the lead by defending in numbers for the remainder of the game.  They were effective on the flanks and looked to counter with unbelievable pace on both sides. Going into the half, they fired nine shots to just two for the Eagles. The second half looked to be a completely different book as the Eagles fired 11 shots to the Ducks 3.

In general, the match was a classic.  It was anyone's game, and both teams had opportunities to win the game in regulation and OT.  Steven's appeared to have the best chance in overtime from some crafty work by their right wing back.  He played a dangerous ball to the back post which hit the post and bounced in the middle of the box only to be cleared by an Eastern defender.  Overtime was back and forth, as both back-lines remained strong until the end of the 2nd overtime.

With the game to be decided through penalty kicks, the first four Eastern kickers connected. After the hosts were only able to score on three of their first five, the Eagles advanced. Terry Fry, Ryan Castle, Clark, and Taylor VanBrackle all converted their kicks.

Though officially called a tie, the Eagles advance to the next round of the NCAA Tournament for the first time in team history. Coach Wagner's squad will take on York College of Pennsylvania at Stevens on Sunday Night at 6:00 pm.

Earlier in the afternoon, the Eastern women's team advanced over Salisbury University with a 1-0 win at TCNJ.

Sunday night's game will be webcast on Steven's website.
