Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Women's Soccer Downs York in Overtime

Ninety minutes of soccer was not enough to separate the Eastern University women and their counterparts from York. Kristin Watson put away her tenth of the year on the Eagles' ninth corner kick of the match to lift Eastern to a new program high in wins for a season.

Things looked promising for the host Eagles as they earned several dangerous restart chances early. York keeper Megan Cahill cut away a dangerous cross from Kara Neef in the 11th minute, and the game remained knotted at zero.

The Eagles speed up front created a great chance in the 29th minute. Nicole Grindle attacked the goal on the dribble and got fouled just outside the 18. It was the fourth dangerous restart chance of the day, and Jill DiRenzo cracked the free kick around a screen in front and into the right side of the goal for her team-best 21st goal of the year. Amanda Daveler had to make a tough save looking into low sun to keep the Spartans off the board in the first half. The Eagles outshot their guests 5-2 in the first half.

The Spartans came out with great energy in the second half, and tied up the match on a  Jill Stanley goal from in close just over three and a half minutes in. York continued to press and create good chances. In the 70th minute, Erin Kuhn earned a position deep in the box and forced Daveler to make a diving stop to maintain the tie.

In the 7th minute, Ashley Hackman earned the endline on the right side and cracked a cross from in deep, but DiRenzo's one time shot went just over the bar and the match continued. The Eagles earned six corners in the second half, but it was York that had the most dangerous corner of the half as time expired. The Spartans hit the corner as the clock went to zero. The Spartans crashed the goal and headed home the ball, but the horn had sounded and time had expired. Daveler was injured in a collision on the play and had to be relieved for the overtime. York fired ten shots to the Eagles' four in the second half.

Just under a minute into the extra period, DiRenzo sent a ball through for Grindle. Grindle was unable to win the race for the ball but pressured the defender into giving up the corner kick. Corie Brant whipped a quality ball in to Watson, and the junior, who had not scored a collegiate goal prior to this year, pushed the ball across the line for her tenth of the season.

Coach Mouw said of the game, "York is a very good team that plays with a lot of energy. They brought it to us in the second half a little bit, but our team was able to hold off their charge and convert in the end. Kristin has scored big goals for us all year, and Nicole's work to create both chances shouldn't go unnoticed. I am pleased with the result and I am proud of the way we competed against a tough physical opponent. We will be able to learn a lot from this game."

The win is the second overtime win of the year for the 15-3 Eagles, who return to action Wednesday when they host Moravian College in another strong regional match-up.
