YORK, Pa.— Eastern University Women's Volleyball (3-4, 1-0) opened the MAC Commonwealth season with an efficient three-set win at York
Josie Arezina hit .438 with eight kills to lead a balanced Eastern attack and first-year middle hitter
Lane McLaughlin led the Eastern defense with a strong presence at the net.
In the opening set, the Eagles jumped out to a 5-0 lead with
Emma Ciesielka serving. The Spartans closed the gap to two points at 7-5 before the Eagles built the lead in nearly every rotation on the way to a 25-14 opening-set win. Arezina finished the opening set Sith six kills on the six swings. The Eagles hit .278 I the frame and had a pair of aces.
The host Spartans led the second set 18-16 before the Eagles turned the momentum with back-to-back kills from
Piper Xeller.
Veronica Faber served an ace in her four-point run to put the Eagles up 21-18. York grabbed two points back to close the gap to 21-20 and force an Eastern timeout. McLaughlin and
Alexis Standford combined on a block to end the set with the Eagles up 25-21.
The Eagles won the second despite posting only six kills in the set. Xeller was the only Eastern hitter with two kills int he frame.
The Eagles found their offensive footing on the way to a 25-18 win in the third. McLaughlin combined with C'hannah Lawson for a block to end the match. Standford and Faber each had three kills in the third.
Grace Cooper led the Eagles with 14 digs and
Alyssa Heffner finished with 19 assists.
Eastern will play at Haverford College at 7:00 on Friday. That match, originally the team's home-opener, has been moved down the Main Line because of unexpected construction work on Eastern's gym floor.
