Men's Track and Field

Track and Field to Compete at MAC Championships

Eastern University Track and Field is set to compete at the MAC Championships on Thursday, Friday, Saturday. The three-day event is hosted at Messiah University.

The Eastern men will look to take another big step forward after an outstanding Indoor Championships. The Eagles finished fourth inside but felt they left some points on the table with a DNF and a DQ in a pair of relays and a DQ in the hurdles. League coaches picked Eastern to finish third.

To claim a top-three spot or better, the Eastern men will look to a deep group on the track and in the jumps and try to snare some podium spots in the throws and multi events.

Eastern's three relays are ranked in the top three. The 4 x800 has not run its top group yet, and the Eagles would love to take a shot at ten points to start the meet on Thursday. Eastern's 4 x 100 group is seeded second and will look to qualify for Saturday's final with a prelim on Friday. The Eagles were right in the mix on the 4 x 200 inside when a dropped baton ended their run. Head Coach Will Mills has been working with exchanges and Eastern holds the facility record at Messiah.

Eastern's final standing could come down to the 4 x 400 where they are the only team in under 4:20. Health through the meet will be a big determining factor, but the Eagles have program-record quality with a number of different options in the event.

Donavan Skinner scored in the Heptathlon inside and would love to improve on his seed in the two-day event that starts on Thursday. Skinner is seeded eighth with only a pair of PR's in his one multi this spring. Multiple points from the multi would be massive for Eastern's hopes. Foday Koroma has Eastern's program-record in the hammer and would love to grab Eastern's first podium spot in that event.

Friday's events will go a long way toward determining Eastern's ultimate success. The Eagles will enter four in the Steeplechase. Ryle Mellinger is the top seed by a few tenths over LVC's Wyatt Leitzel, but the rest of the field looks pretty open. If the Eagles could sneak three guys on to the podium in the first final Friday, it could set the tone for a weekend.

Led by Keyon Jones and Ian Hopkins at one and two, The Eagles would love to get all three of their entries into the finals in the 110 High Hurdles. Jahari Brown leads Eastern's entries in the 100 and 200. With six entries in the 100 and seven in the 200, the Eagles would love to have multiple runners racing on Saturday. Brown is seeded third in the 100 and fourth in the 200.

Though Christian Scales sits just outside a podium spot in the flat 400, a solid PR could put him into a point scoring scenario.

Robert Walton is tied for a top spot in the 800 and Joshua Knox Wagner has the seventh-fastest time in the league. That duo will be joined by Tyler Long and Malachi Wilson in a pretty tight field for Friday's prelims. Walton and Knox-Wagner are both in the second heat.

Keyon Jones and ShaMar Davis are both in the top eight in the 400 Hurdles. They will race in a pair of heats on Friday for a chance for the podium on Saturday.

Eastern will need to get solid performances in the jumps to maximize field points. Lawrence Day, Joshua Harris, and Jones are all in the mix for a podium spot in the High Jump. The Eagles would love to get a couple medals out of that group. Elijah McCollough and Jeric Lewis are both capable of earning medal points in the Long Jump and Triple Jump.

If Derrick Swain, who missed a long stretch with a football injury, could hit a PR in the Discus, he would likely be in the running for a medal and huge team points. Jeffrey Robins on the brink of a podium spot in the shot and Brandon Downey is Eastern's best shot at points in the Javelin.

Mellinger is near the top of the field in the 1500 and the 5000 and is entered in both. If the meet result comes down to it, a gutty result in the 5k and an Eastern win in the 4 x 400 could see the Eagles make history.

Without the same depth in the line-up, the Eastern women will look to build a team score while maximizing individual success.

Janitza Hernandez-Albino is seeded third in the Heptathlon and is also going to compete on Saturday in the Triple Jump.

Savana Dodd has been a stalwart in the throws, and she is currently inside the top-25 in the Shot Put. She is entered in all three of the rotational throws. She is seeded second in the Shot-Put and fourth and seventh in the Discus and Hammer. She would love to claim a title and a second medal .

Josie Dowd in the Javelin is one of several Eastern athletes whose seed has them just off the podium. Aniya Stevens will run a Friday prelim in the 100 to try to make a final. Zion Greene will do the same in the women's 400 Meters. Tyla Cooper and Madison Bunnell will hunt for podium spots in the Long Jump.

Ahnarie Anderson in the 400 Hurdles and Gisella Croge in the 800 meters are seeded to make the finals. All three Eastern relays should compete for points.

Live results and video feeds will be available on the MAC Championship page.
