Baseball Drops Opener at Alvernia

READING, Pa. — The bats went quiet early and the pitching staff struggled, as Eastern University Baseball (20-9, 7-6) dropped its series-opener at Alvernia University.

The host Golden Wolves (13-16, 5-8) struck for two in the first, two in the third, and four runs in the sixth before the Eagles put together a two-out rally for a pair of runs in the eighth inning. Matthew Gonglik delivered a single to left field to Trent MacDougall and Thomas Kozlusky. MacDougall started the rally with a two-out walk and Kozlusky kept it going with a double down the left field line. Kozlusky and Gonglik each had two hits on the afternoon, but the Eagles only had six total hits.

The Eagles put runners on in each of the first two innings, but double-plays shortened the rallies in both. The first inning ended on a traditional ground-ball double play, and the first two outs of the second came on a ground ball to third that turned into a force out at that bag and tag at the plate after an errant throw to first.

The Golden Wolves tacked on two more runs in the eighth inning and finished with 11 hits. It is the first time the Eastern pitching staff has allowed ten earned runs in a game since March 3rd.

Graham Adams (3-1) started and pitched the first four innings for the Eagles.

The Eagles and Golden Wolves will complete their series with a noon doubleheader at The Yard tomorrow.
