UNION, N.J.— After splitting a pair of one-sided affairs in the first week of the year, Eastern University Men's Lacrosse came up on the short end of a 13-10 game at Kean University.
John Tinney and
Brett Gougler each scored twice, but the host Cougars won each of the final three quarters by a single goal to emerge with the win.
Gougler scored from
Brett Williamson on the first possession of the game, and after Kean equalized on a man-up goal,
Duncan Starmer gave the Eagles a lead with an unassisted tally with four-and-a-half minutes left in the quarter. Kean equalized with ninety seconds left in the quarter.
Gougler put Eastern up early in the second and
Frankie Fanelli made it 4-3 with four-and-a-half minutes left int he half, but a three-goal burst over a ninety second span put Kean up 6-4. Gougler completed his hat-trick to close the gap to one before halftime.
After Kean scored first in the second half, Tinney scored twice to tie the score at 7-7. The game, however, did not stay tied for long. The Cougars (1-1) converted a faceoff win and held an 8-7 edge until Starmer set up
Maxwell Forrey for a goal with four minutes left.
Kean scored the final two goals of the third to built a two-goal edge.
With a goal to open the fourth, the Cougars grabbed the first three-goal lead of the game. Tinney closed the gap to 11-9 with his third of the day, but two more Kean goals meant that a late tally from Fanelli would not impact the result.
Brendan Kirn made 17 stops in goal.
Nicholas Ciampaglio and Tinney each finished with three caused turnovers.
The Eagles (1-2) will host No. 18 Swarthmore College (1-0) on Wednesday. The Garnet beat Widener 18-5 this afternoon.
