Men's Soccer Tops York in League-Opener

ST. DAVIDS, Pa.— With a gritty defensive effort, Eastern University Men's Soccer made a seventh-minute tally from Morris Marshall stand in a 1-0 league-opening win over the visiting York College Spartans. Michael Arcuri made seven stops in goal to secure the clean sheet and the full three points in the table.

The Eagles (6-1-3, 1-0) came into the game on four-match unbeaten run, but the Spartans (6-3-2, 0-2), with big wins over Dickinson and Rochester, figured to be a massive test to open the MAC Commonwealth slate.

Marshall's big moment came after a wayward York clear found its way to Eastern's left side. The sophmore winger made a quick move on the flank before driving infield toward his right foot. His shot from the edge of the box hit the back of the net almost as soon as he struck it. the strike is Marshall's second of the year and third-career tally.

From there, the Eastern had even more work to do. The Spartans brought waves of pressure with long throws and five corners. Though the guests fired 14 first-half shots, only three found their way through. Jacob Shalev, Nate Holt, Ryan Belmont, and Iñigo Gullón Santana each had moments of brilliance blocking shots and clearing balls across the back row.

Though the Spartans had the advantage in possession and field position, the best save of the first half came at the other end of the field. In the 27th minute, Zach Sievert found space in the attacking third and drove left into the box. Denied a chance to go right, the senior captain drove to his left and beat a pair of defenders before driving a ball to the back post. York goalkeeper Jake Bono kicked his shot from danger and kept the Eastern lead at 1-0.

With a bright sun in their eyes, the second half presented an additional challenge for Arcuri and the Eaastern back row. Holt led the way, winning numnerous aerial duels on corners and throws. The Spartans had eight second-half corner kicks, numerous long thhrows and several dangerous restarts. The most dangerous of those came on an 89th-minute shot from 30 yards out.  York's Tom Shroder curled a shot toward the upper corner. Arcuri parried the shot off the outside of the woodwork for one final corner. Arcuri's final save came on a loose ball from only yards away after a tight serve.

Though out-shot and out-possessed, the Eagles showed moments of danger in the counter. Marcus Pringle's shot from a tight angle in the 87th minute forced a big save from Bono at the near post.

"I'm really proud of the guys," Head Coach Luca Mellor said after the game. "A great goal from Morris and a fantastic effort by the entire group. We now have to recover and gear up for another test against a very good team from Neumann."

The Eagles will host the Neumann University Knights as league opponents for the first time since 2007. Since 1997, the Eagles have a 14-2-1 edge in the series. The Knights, however, claimed those two wins in 2024 and 2025. Neumann is at WIdener tonight after beating York in the league-opener for both those sides.
