READING, Pa. - Senior
Tia Argento scored the game-winning goal in the 85th minute off a free kick from
Heather Abzug as Eastern Women's Soccer earned a critical three points with a 1-0 victory at Alvernia. With the win, Eastern now sits in fourth place in the MAC Commonwealth standings.
With time winding down, Abzug was fouled while controlling the ball on the right side of the pitch, setting up a free kick 21 yards away from goal. On the ensuing restart, Abzug struck a perfect ball, and Argento headed it past Alvernia goalkeeper Abby Rowley to put the Eagles ahead. It was the second goal of the season and the third career goal for Argento, while Abzug picked up her third assist of the year, all of which have come off restarts.
Senior goalkeeper
Faith Leake made four saves in the victory. The Philadelphia native now has four shutouts this season and 16 for her career.
The Eagles came out firing, recording six shots, four of which were on goal, in the opening half, but could solve Rawley, who made four saves. The Eagles' defense limited the Golden Wolves to just one shot in the first 45 minutes, but neither team could find the back of the net in the first half.
The Golden Wolves had a little more offensive success after halftime, firing five shots on Leake in a 22-minute span. Leake stopped all four shots to keep the game scoreless. In the 81st minute,
Corrine Myers put a great chance off the crossbar off a corner kick, but Argento scored three minutes later to secure the Eastern victory.
Eastern (6-6-2) will be back home on Tuesday for a 3:00 pm tilt against Albright.
