Women's Volleyball Tops LBC in Four

ASTON, Pa.— With a balanced attack and a strong blocking presence at the net, Eastern University Women's Volleyball earned a 3-1 win over Lancaster Bible College in a home game played at Neumann University. Jessie Schreiber hit .409 with 11 kills and six blocks to lead the Eagles.

In the opening set, Eastern (6-6) led wire-to-wire and pulled away on strong service runs from Sarah Furey and Emma Ciesielka in the middle of the frame. Lane McLaughlin had four of her career-high tying  nine blocks in the first, and Josie Arezina and Schreiber each put away three balls on the way to a 25-18 win.

Everything went right for the Eagles in the second set. They led 9-5 and pulled away to a 25-10 win. Eastern went 9-for-10 on their sideout chances in the frame. Piper Xeller had four kills and the team hit .400. McLaughlin and Schreiber had a stretch where they earned block points on four of five points.

The Chargers (4-7) adjusted in the third and set away from Schreiber and McLaughlin and took the lead at 18-17 before scoring six of the final seven points of the set to extend the match. Alexis Standford had four kills in the set, but the Eagles hit only .081 and had just a pair of blocks. LBC hit .214 int he third set.

Senior libero Grace Cooper got things started for the Eagles in the fourth as Eastern went up 4-1 after an ace and a kill from Schreiber. The Chargers closed the gap to a single point at 6-5, but the Eagles served aggressively and Schreiber found holes in the block to maintain the lead. Xeller had six digs and the Eastern defense held the Chargers to only .031 hitting in the 25-18 win.

Cooper finished the match with 16 digs and a pair of aces. Sarah Furey had 19 assists and ten digs while splitting setting duties with Alyssa Heffner. McLaughlin now has 51 blocks in 33 sets played.

Eastern will travel back to the nation's capital for a pair of matches at Marymount University on Saturday.
