LANGHORNE, Pa.— In the squad's first road test of the year, Eastern University Women's Soccer (3-0) scored three times in the first half and added another goal early in the second to claim a 4-0 win at Cairn University.
Emma Bennett scored twice and
Heather Abzug and
Bridget Hitchner added goals and the Eastern defense picked up its third clean sheet in as many outings.
Bennett opened the scoring in the 21st minute. The senior forward took a pass from Molly Shellpeper in a pocket of space outside the box, made a quick move to earn the box and fired a right footed shot to a low corner for the early lead. Seven minutes later Bennett completed her brace with a banger to the top left corner from 35-yards out. She picked up the loose ball in the midfield after
Megan Burkholder disrupted a clearing effort.
Abzug picked up her first collegiate goal in the 39th minute. The rookie from Holbrook, N.Y. took a drop pass from
Emily Brownell and curled a right-hooted shot through traffic that found its way to the back of the net. Eastern had a 20-1 edge in first-half shots.
The Eagles matched that edge in the second half, but they only found the net once. In the 47th minute,
Leah Fowler delivered a serve from the left side to set up Hitchner for a tap-in.
The Eagles finished with a 10-1 edge in corners for the game. With 31 Eagles seeing action, only Kate Mason and
Faith Leake played more than 45 minutes. Mason logged 47 minutes at left back, and Leake went the full 90 to earn the shutout win in goal.
Today's game was the first ever between the two local schools. The Eagles have a pair of games next week. They are at Delaware Valley on Tuesday and will host Moravian on Friday.
