Field Hockey Falters at Neumann

ASTON, Pa.— Four days after finding a late equalizer and overtime winner, Eastern University Field Hockey was unable to rally in a 2-1 loss at Neumann University. The host Knights (6-3) scored twice on penalty corners to secure their Homecoming win.

In the eighth minute, the Knights went up on a well-executed penalty corner. The Eagles defended a first penalty corner, but a foul in the clearance resulted in a second and Gabrilella Cappelli tucked home her first of two on the day.

The Eagles (5-4) equalized in the waning moments of the opening quarter. Karlee Howard found a foot to force a penalty corner. Abby Hakes played the insert. Kara Frantz settled the pass and waited for the rush to commit before playing a ball to her left. Jenna Reider slammed a rolling shot toward the cage that Bailey DiGregoria redirected around the Neumann goalie for her second career tally.

The Eagles had an extended stretch of pressure in the middle of the second quarter, but several strong plays from the Neumann goalie and several near missed kept Eastern from pulling into the lead. Eastern had a 3-0 edge in second-corner penalty corners.

The Knights found what turned into the game-winner in the early seconds of the fourth quarter. Angelina Catania made a great save on a shot in the run of play, but Neumann's rebound effort found a leg. Cappelli put away her second of the day on Neumann's only penalty corner of the fourth.

The Eagles had four penalty corners in the final frame but could not find the equalizer. With 12 minutes left, CJ Summa came close as her shot hit the inside of a the post.

Neumann and Eastern were both members of the Pennsylvania Athletic Conference in the 90's and the 2000's. Neumann will enter the MAC as a MAC Commonwealth school next fall. Eastern had won 16-straight in the series dating back to 1997.

Eastern will host Stockton on Wednesday at 4:00 pm.
