READING, Pa. - Eastern Baseball recorded its second-highest offensive output of the season on Tuesday afternoon with a 21-2, run-rule victory over Penn State Berks. Sophomore Matt Gonglik drove in a career-high six runs,
Luke Meehan continued his torrid hitting, and the Eagles (10-15) used a pair of six-inning innings to reach double-digit wins on the season.
Gonglik finished 2-for-4 from the dish, hitting a pair of two-run singles who also driving home runs on a bases-loaded walk and a PSU Berks fielding error. Meehan, who finished with 12 hits in five games last week, recorded another three on Tuesday while also driving in four runs.
Brock Langlotz drove in three runs, while
Joe Paradise and
JJ Matos each drove in a pair.
After a scoreless first inning, the Eagles struck for four runs in the top of the second inning, highlighted by Gonglik's first two-run single of the day. Paradise and Meehan also recorded run-scoring knocks to put the Eagles ahead 4-0.
Matthew Gonglik hit another two-run single in the top of the third, before the Eastern offense exploded for 12 runs over the course of the next two frames. Langlotz and Meehan each hit two-run singles, and Gonglik walked in another, to make it a 13-2 lead in the fourth.
The Eagles scored six more runs in the fifth on bases-loaded walks to Langlotz, Kozlusky, and Matos, another RBI single from Meehan, a PSU fielding error, and a pinch hit, sacrifice fly from
Will Carroll. In the seventh inning,
Flynn Carroll capped off the Eastern offensive barrage with a two-run triple, giving the Eagles the eventual 21-2 triumph. It was the first triple and RBIs of
Flynn Carroll's Eastern career.
Eastern's pitching rotation of
Peter Mellana (1-0),
Roy Corso, and
Gage Curnane kept the PSU Berks lineup in check all afternoon long. The trio combined to give up just five hits while recording a combined eight strikeouts. Mellana finished with six of the Eagles' eight punchouts.
Eastern returns to conference action this coming weekend at Alvernia. The Eagles will begin its three-game series with the Golden Wolves on Friday at 3:30 pm.
