ROANOKE, Va. - Eastern Women's Basketball battled valiantly on Sunday afternoon, but ended the Jean Beamer Tip-Off Classic with a 65-51 loss to Hollins College. The Eagles were outscored 33-18 in the first frame and shot just 31.7 percent from the floor.
The Eagles led late in the first quarter, 8-6, but Hollins outscored Eastern 9-0 the rest of the way to take a lead they would not relinquish. The Eagles shot just three-for-21 in the first 10 minutes, and shot just 3-for-13 in the second frame.Â
Eastern rebounded nicely in the second quarter, outscoring Hollins 33-32 in the final two quarters, but the double-digit halftime deficit proved to much to overcome. Eastern shot eight-of-16 in the third quarter and six-of-13 in the fourth.Â
Three Eagles finished in double figures. First-year center
Madeline Wylie had her best game of her young career, scoring 16 points on seven-of-nine shooting to go along with a team-high eight rebounds. Fellow first-year
Adriana Summersett scored 14 points, while senior
Jeriyah Johnson collected 13 for Eastern.
The Eagles (2-2) return to action on Thursday for its home opener against Muhlenberg. Opening tip is set for 7:00 pm.
