Men's Soccer Stumbles in MAC Opener at Hood

FREDERICK, Md.— The host Hood College Blazers scored in the opening minute, and pulled away late to earn a 3-0 result in the MAC Commonwealth opener for both teams. Eastern University Men's soccer chased the game and had multiple chances to equalize, but a pair of goals just over a minute apart ended Eastern's comeback chance.

Down 1-0, the Eagles had multiple chances in the first half. Steven Fajardo had back-to-back efforts on restarts late. HIs first, a volley from close range, put pressure on goal, but was turned away. His next effort, a header from in close, sailed over the crossbar. Hood also had chances. The Blazers hit a post in the 38th minute. Mauro Lence had a volley inside the six parried over the bar. Both teams registered nine first half shots.

With the game more open than it probably should have been, the Eagles had back-to-back one-on-one chances thrwarted by Hood's goalkeeper in the 55th and 57th minute.

The Eagles continued to throw numbers forward and eventually paid when the Blazers doubled their lead in the 70th minute. Hood scored again just over a minute later.

Ty Bleiler made seven stops and Hood goalkeeper Adam Labows made eight. Eastern is at Swarthmore College on Tuesday night and will return to MAC Commonwealth action with a home test against Messiah on Friday.
