ABINGTON, Pa. - With the match tied 1-1 early in the second half, Eastern Women's Soccer potted a pair of goals in a span of 4:33 to regain the lead for good and eventually capture a 3-2 road at Penn State Abington on Tuesday afternoon.
Ella Marrollo scored her third goal of the season in the 64th minute and
Emma Bennett scored her second in the 68th to help Eastern secure its fifth win of the 2024 season.
Off a restart and subsequent multiple changes of possession in the midfield, Marrollo was able to gather the ball and glide into the PSU defensive zone. The graduate forward ripped a shot into the bottom left corner of the net to put the Eagles ahead 2-1.
Shortly after a PSU goal kick, a big tackle and steal by
Ella Sedor in the midfield led to Eastern's goal. After the turnover, Sedor found
Billinda Leisner, who then sprung Bennett in the attacking zone. The junior midfielder buried her chance into the bottom left corner to put the Eagles ahead by two goals. The Lions scored a penalty kick goal a short time later, but the Eagles' defense held the home team without a shot in the final 20 minutes of game action.
Reigning MAC Commonwealth Player of the Week
Mia Zucker got the scoring started for the Eagles in the 30th minute. The sophomore forward stole a clearing attempt just outside the 18 and fired a shot high and into the back of the net for her sixth goal of the season.
Despite having an early goal called back and two penalties go against them in the second half, the Eagles kept their composure throughout the entire 90 minutes.
"Credit our ladies for grinding until the final whistle and keeping their heads throughout," Eastern Head Coach
Jess Shanahan said. "This was a positive result for us, but also one that showed the mental toughness of our group in those moments of adversity."
Eastern returns home to St. Davids on Saturday for a 1:00 pm match against the Marywood Pacers.
