ST. DAVIDS, Pa.– Eastern University Men's Soccer had two shots in the final five seconds to claim the match, but the goalkeeper for the visiting Gordon College Fighting Scots made a pair of stops and the Eagles had to settle for a 0-0 draw. Both teams had chances throughout the evenly played match.
The Eagles had shooting opportunities throughout, but several of their best chances turned into shots off target under pressure from a stout Gordon defense. The final two efforts came on a lte transition effort after the visitors probed deep into the Eastern end.
Evan Cope sent the Gordan goalkeeper sprawling with a shot from the right.
Matthew Capuano won the race to the rebound but his shot from the left was tipped from danger and the clock struck zero with the ball trickling away from the Gordon net.
Eastern's next best chance of the second half came on a header from Joao Tarabel in the 80th minute. The sophomore midfielder beat the Gordon goalkeeper with a lofted ball to the back post, but a Scot dropped behind and headed the ball off the line.
With fast forwards and a 5-0 edge in corner kicks, the Scots had chances as well. The visitors saw their best chance go by in the 75th minute.
Ty Bleiler turned away a low shot from the right side by Will Goodling. The rebound, however, bounced directly to a second Gordon forward who was running full speed at the goal. Somehow the ball made it over the crossbar from five yards out.
Evan Cope and
Zach Sievert created several chances for the Eagles early on. The best of those came on a hard pressure by Cope from the right side. He knocked a ball loose that Sievert played into central space.
Carson Cope met the pass at the penalty spot, but his shot drifted over the crossbar.
The match is the first meeting between the two programs since at least 1990.
The Eagles (2-2-1) will play at Ursinus College on Tuesday evening.
