Volleyball Wins Twice at Battlefield

GETTYSBURG, Pa.– Eastern University Volleyball (4-0) earned a pair of wins to finish the weekend at the Battlefield Classic without a loss. The Eagles picked up an important five-set win over local rival Franklin and Marshall College before closing out the day with a three set win over the Dickinson College Red Devils. Logan Martin and Hannah Pringle each had 15 kills in the win over F & M.

The Eagles won all the odd sets in the opening match against an F & M squad that figures to compete at the top of the region and the Centennial Conference. Despite hitting only .125 in the first frame, the Eagles earned a 25-21 win. Hannah Pringle led a balanced attack with three kills in the opener. 

The Diplomats used six second-set aces to earn a 25-22 win in the second set. The Eagles hit a very solid .300 in the set, but the Diplomats had the advantage on the block and at the service line and leveled the match at 1-1. In the third set, the Eastern offense stayed strong and the passing found its rhythm. The Eagles were successful on 12-of-17 sideout chances and put away 16 kills on only 28 attacks for a .464 hitting percentage. martin had five kills in the set, and Elle Jiron Bujanda had 11 assists. 

After a tough fourth set, the Eagles rallied from a 7-3 deficit in the fifth set to pull away to a 15-10 win. Grace Casagrande served for five points and Trinity Gruber put together a three-point service run to end the match. Casagrande went past twenty digs for the third time in three matches and finished with 22. Bridgette Kelly finished with 10 kills, two aces and three blocks. 

"Four wins is a great start," Head Coach Mark Birtwistle said of the weekend. "the team showed a lot of resilience and fight being down in several sets this weekend. That's a sign of a cohesive group and that's great to see early."

In the match against Dickinson, the Eagles hit .302 as a team and used a balanced attack to earn the three-set win. Viviana Fragoso finished with a team-high 13 digs and Jiron Bujanda had 36 assists. With her 158 assists this weekend, Jiron-Bujanda becomes the sixth Eastern University player to accumulate over 3,000 career assists. Jailene Lugo, McKenzie Boyer, and Kelly each had seven kills, Logan Martin had eight and Pringle had nine. Casagrande finished with three aces. 

The Eagles will continue their early-season tour of the Centennial Conference opponents next Friday when they host Main Line rival Haverford College at The Nest.
