Pfau Scores Twice; Men's Soccer Saves Draw at Stevenson

OWINGS MILLS, Md. – Ethan Pfau put together his second two-goal game in the last two outings to help Eastern University Men's Soccer salvage a 2-2 tie at Stevenson University. Pfau scored on a header in the 71st minute to level the match.

Heading into today's match at Stevenson, it was thought the result would bring some clarity to post-season chances. The draw was the one result that would not bring any clarity. The Eagles remain in a space where they can win some games and get in or lose some games and fall out. With three matches to play, the Eagles will likely need to pick up at least six points, and possibly seven to move into the top four.

A week ago, that would have seemed like a really tough ask, but with players returning to health, the Eagles have scored six times in two matches and have been very positive in possession and out.

The Eagles (4-7-4, 1-2-1) went up on in the 37th minute after Pfau won a ball near the top of the box. The sophomore forward spun away from pressure and found a small window to lace a left-footed blast into the top of the goal from 25 yards out.

Even though they trailed 8-5 in shots, the Eagles went to the break up a goal.

The Mustangs (3-7-6, 1-1-2) seized on a pair of restart chances to grab the lead back in a 90-second span. The hosts drew level on a well-headed corner kick goal in the 56th minute, and then took the lead on the dregs of a free kick chance in the 58th.

The play started on a half clear of a Stevenson pass into the box. Osmond Chan appeared to slide right through the ball in helping the clear along, but the referee determined that there was contact and award a free kick 35 yards from goal. The Stevenson serve was solid. The Eagles were first to the ball, but a clearing attempt stayed in the box and somehow the ball arrived six yards from goal on the feet of a Stevenson player who was not offside.

The Eagles found their composure and started the process of getting back into the match. Possessing the ball with calmness, the Eagles started to develop chances. Pfau had one shot saved and had another effort blocked for a corner. The equalizer came off a long throw-in from the right side. Zach Chaplin heaved the ball into the mix, and Pfau redirected a header to the back post. His shot hit the upright and trickled into the net for Pfau's tenth career goal.

The Eagles had a great chance in the 79th minute when Evan Cope and Francisco Fiol broke free against a Stevenson back row that had started to push forward. Cope slipped a pass to Fiol on his right, but the Mustang goalkeeper reacted well and stopped the close-range effort.

Ty Bleiler made four saves in goal for the Eagles.

Eastern will play at Alvernia on Saturday. The Golden Wolves lost their home match to Messiah this evening.
