Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Late Rally Falls Short for Women's Basketball at Hood

FREDERICK, Md. – Only four days after putting together its most complete performance of the season in an upset win at Widener, Eastern University Women's Basketball could not overcome a slow start in a 52-43 road loss to MAC Commonwealth rival Hood College. Jeriyah Johnson led the Eagles with 15 points, and Taryn Woodson added another double-double with 10 points and 15 rebounds.

The Eagles trailed 47-29 with seven minutes to play, before the Eagles put together a 14-to-1 run to pull within five with 82 seconds left. Miranda Liebtag scored eight in the run and Johnson had five points. After Trinity Upton split a pair at the foul line, the Eagles had the ball with a chance to cut the deficit to a single possession. A turnover and a foul allowed the host Blazers to stretch their lead to seven and ice the game.

The Eagles (6-8, 2-2) made 5-of-9 shots and 3-of-5 in that burst. That shooting, however, was too little and too late as the Eagles finished the game just 16-of-68 (23.8 %). The Blazers made only 17 shots from the floor but made the difference for the game with 15 free throws made to just six makes for the Eagles.

The Blazers made nine of those field goals in pulling out to 22-7 lead after one quarter. With Woodson in foul trouble, the Eagles made only 3-of-18 shots through ten minutes. Hood had a 13-7 edge on the glass through one quarter.

Eastern cut the Hood lead to nine at halftime, but a surge from the hosts to start the second half put the Eagles back into a double-digit deficit.

Chanelle Lee scored 22 points to lead the Blazers (2-12, 1-3).

Eastern will host Alvernia at 7 pm on Wednesday.
