Box Score ALLENTOWN, Pa.– Using good defense to stay in the match early, Eastern University Women's Volleyball rolled to a three set win over Ursinus College in the opening match of the Buttermaker Tournament at Muhlenberg College.
Hannah Pringle led the Eastern attack with 15 kills and a .461 hitting percentage.
The Eagles won 25-17, 25-11, and 25-14. Head Coach Mark BIrtwistle pointed to the play of his defensive specialists as crucial in earning the first set win and setting the tone for the match.
Grace Casagrande had 16 digs,
Viviana Fragoso had nine, and
Grace Cooper had seven.
Logan Martin finished with eight kills on only 11 swings, and
Elle Jiron-Bujanda inched closer to 2,000 assists for her career with 36. Birtwistle noted that it took a while for his team to get going in transition, but that steady side-out play kept them in control for the match.
In a week that saw heat change all kinds of schedules, nobody at Eastern imagined a Friday evening volleyball match would also be impacted by the weather. With no air conditioning in Muhlenberg's Memorial Hall and a full day of volleyball, the official slated to referee the final match of the day between Eastern and Lebanon Valley was too faint to do the match, so the match was canceled.
The Eagles will play Bluffton College from Ohio at noon and the host Mules at 2:00 pm.
