ST. DAVIDS, Pa.– In today's non-league test between two MAC teams, Eastern University Field Hockey scored the first two goals of the game, but the visiting Arcadia University Knights (3-4) rallied to earn a 3-2 win.
Kara Frantz and
JoEl Groff each scored in the first quarter.
After fending off a pair of Arcadia forays into the circle early, the Eagles (2-4) escaped the zone and earned a penalty corner on their first trip into the penalty circle. The Eastern corner group executed perfectly as Frantz took the insert from Abbey Hakes and, with screens in place, drove home her first goal of the season for a 1-0 lead in the fourth minute.
Groff doubled the Eastern lead in with a minute to play in the quarter. Frantz moved the ball through the midfield and found Groff in transition. The junior forward made a strong run into the circle and ripped a hard shot inside the right upright.
The Knights had a 5-3 edge in first-quarter shots, but the Eagles held a 2-0 lead at the break.
The visitors continued to press forward and controlled field position in the second quarter. Early on, the Eastern defense kept the Knights at the edge of the circle, but the Knights broke through on a Morganne Dee goal in the 19th minute. Arcadia leveled the score on a rebound goal in the 26th minute. The Knights had an 8-0 edge in second quarter shots.
After a third quarter spent primarily in the midfield, the Knights got the game-winner off a restart from the right side. Dee scored for her eighth of the year.
Abby Agapito had seven saves and
Emma Kircher helped her out with a defensive save.
The Eagles will travel to Stevens Institute of Technology for another non-league game on Saturday.
