Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Men's Soccer Stopped at Rutgers Camden

CAMDEN, N.J. – Eastern University Men's Soccer dropped a tough 2-0 decision at Rutgers Camden. The Eagles had the best chance of the first half and were on the front foot early in the second half, but the host Raptors found goals in the 61st and 70th minutes to pull away to the win.

After much of the first half was played in the midfield, the Eagles found a chance in transition when Zach Sievert threaded a pass behind the Raptor back line. Evan Cope won the race to the ball, but the Rutgers- Camden goalkeeper blocked his one-time strike and the score remained tied at the intermission. Rutgers Camden had a 4-2 edge in first -half shots.

The Eagles opened the second half on the attack and created several chances early. A  Raptor corner at the hour mark, however, turned into set piece that made the difference in the match. Rutgers Camden went short and the Eagles responded with numbers to the ball, but the referee called a foul near the edge of the box. The resulting free kick took a deflection off the wall to beat a diving Ty Bleiler.

The Raptors doubled their lead on a well-taken volley from the left side after a big switching pass.

The Eagles continued to press in the attacking third, but the two-goal edge proved to be too much to overcome.

"We were pressing them," Head Coach Luca Mellor said after the match. "We said at halftime that the game would probably come down to a set piece. Unfortunately, it did."

The Eagles are at Penn State Berks for a non-league game on Wednesday.
