Volleyball Sweeps Two Matches at Rowan

GLASSBORO, N.J.– Eastern University Volleyball needed five sets to beat the host Rowan University Profs, but the Eagles earned an 18-16 win in the fifth set for their 18th consecutive win over their local rivals. Eastern (9-2) had less trouble int he second match with an efficient three-set win over Goucher.

Logan Martin finished with 18 kills to lead the Eagles in the marathon win over the Profs. The junior middle hit .324 in the match. Though they struggled with hitting errors in the morning match, the Eagles won the first two sets in convincing fashion. The Profs hit just .068 in the first two sets, but the found a rhythm in the middle two sets. The Profs hit .217 in winning the third 25-21 and a.346 in taking the fourth 25-17.

Though the matches between the two teams have, for the past several years, have felt close, the third set win was the first set the New Jersey school had taken off the Eagles since Oct. of 2001 and only the third set since 1996.

In the third set, Rowan led 8-6 when the two teams switched sides. That lead grew to 12-6 before Emma Flores put away a kill for a sideout. Eastern pulled to within a point with Bridgette Kelly serving and tied the score at 13-13 with Grace Cooper at the service line. The hosts fought off match points at 15-14 and 16-15, but the Eagles got a kill from Jailene Lugo to convert at 17-16.

Elle Jiron-Bujanda had 45 assists and 15 digs. Kelly and Hannah Pringle each had 12 kills, Lugo finished with nine, and Flores had 10. Grace Casagrande recorded 23 digs.

The Eagles did not leave anything to chance with Goucher. They hit .500 in winning the first set 25-5, and put away 16 balls on 33 swings to win the second set 25-12. Even with major line-up changes, Eastern never trailed in winning the third set 25-18.

Against Goucher, Casagrande led the Eastern defense with 15 digs. Flores added nine. Martin had ten kills and Lexi Couch had seven. Kyra Kisting, Lindsay Addink, and Taylor Stone all ran the Eastern offense through the match.
