Softball Slugs Past Albright for DH Sweep

READING, Pa.– Eastern University softball pounded out 12 extra-base hits to sweep a pair of run-shortened games at Albright. Tori Hook, Jania Long, and Amanda Bruno all hit home runs in the wins. The Eagles scored three in the top of the sixth to close the door on a 9-1 win in the opener. Bruno homered and tripled to knock in four runs in a 10-0 win in the nightcap. Long picked up the win in the opener and Victoria Perez earned the victory in the second game.

Hook drew a 12-pitch walk in the first inning and while the Eagles did not score in the frame, the at-bat set the tone for the day. The Eagles broke through with  single runs in the second and third innings before plating three in the fourth innings. Mackenzie Laub drove in two with a double to right and scored the third when Hook reached on an error.

The Lions scratched out a run off Long in the bottom of the inning, but the Eagles grabbed the run right back after a lead-off double from Sami Britton in the top of the fifth. Kelci Cost drove in the run with a sacrifice fly.

Bryn Clifford came on in relief in the fifth and worked around a two-out single to bring the Eagles back to bat. Alyssa Binczak hit a one-out double to the fence in left-center, but it looked like the Lions might escape further damage when Laub flied out. Hook, however, battled through another lengthy at bat with several hard-hit foul balls before finally getting the direction right on for a two-run homer to left-center. Long then hit the second pitch she saw about twenty feet beyond Hook's towering blast.

The first two Albright hitters reached in the bottom of the inning, but Clifford induced a pop-up and struck out the final two hitters to end the game in six innings.

Only a tremendous play by the Albright shortstop on a screaming line drive from Hook kept the Eagles from opening the second game with a run in the first. The bottom half of the Eastern line-up came through in the second inning after Britton drew a walk. Sydney Ostolaza singled through the left side to put two on. Bruno hit a towering shot the bounced off the top of the fence in right-center before going out for her first career home run and a three-run lead.

The Eagles tacked on three more on four hits in the third. Hook and Britton doubled and Bruno tripled to left-center to cap the rally. The Eagles got several solid pinch-hitting appearances in the fourth. Valentina Marino walked and scored on Hook's second double of the game. Maeve Colligan delivered a two-out RBI single to left for the eight-run lead. Ostolaza gave the Eagles some added insurance with a 2-RBI double.

Hailey Krichten retired six of the seven hitters she faced to close out the game in relief.

The Eagles (12-5) were slated to play at Gwynedd Mercy on Wednesday, but those games are officially listed as postponed because the Griffins are obligated to play a rescheduled league doubleheader on that date. It is possible that a new opponnent could be added to give the Eagles another two games before hosting Hood College next Saturday.
