READING, Pa.– In the second league match of the year, Eastern University Field Hockey spent the entire contest within striking distance, but fell 1-0 at Alvernia. The Golden Wolves (5-7, 1-1) scored in the third minute, but were never able to double the lead.
Abby Agapito finished with 12 stops in goal for the Eagles.
The only goal o the game came on a run up the right side and a shot from a tight angle that slipped just inside the left upright. Though Alvernia controlled field position, the eastern defensive group kept the hosts outside the circle for much of the match. Alvernia had five corners and six shots through the opening half.
Held without a chance at goal in the first half, the Eagles (5-7, 0-2) found opportunities to get out of their end, but they were only able to muster a single shot in the third quarter and a lone penalty corner in the fourth. Despite the limited chances, the Eagles were within one play of forcing overtime throughout the contest.
The Eagles will host Hood College in a noon game this Saturday.
