Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Men's Basketball Falls to Hood in Overtime

ST. DAVIDS, Pa.– For the second time this year, Eastern University Men's Basketball wound up on the short end of an overtime game at home. Hood College guard Garrison Linton converted at the rim with 1.7 seconds to play to lift the visiting Blazers to a 77-75 win and send the MAC Commonwealth standings into chaos. Kevin Reeves finished with a career-high 22 points to lead the Eagles.

Eastern (13-6, 6-4) built a ten-point lead early in the second half, but the Blazers rallied with a 19-to-5 run over a five minute stretch to grab the lead. In that stretch, Hood went 5-of-7 from the field and had three different players connect from behind the arc. The run, in many ways, mirrored the game. Hood finished the game 14-for-39 from behind the arc. The Eagles went just 5-of-30.

The Eagles fought back with a tough jumper from Reeves and a 3-pointer from Kaeshawn Ward, and the Eagles held a 66-65 lead with 90 seconds to play, but Hood forward Will Spencer hit a 3-pointer to put the guests up. An empty Eastern possession gave Hood the ball with a minute left.

Electing to press out and play defense, the Eagles forced the action and got the stop they needed on a block from Jaron Fairweather. Reeves grabbed the rebound and went coast-to-coast. The senior forward seemed to sidestep away from contact while making a shot, and the Eastern crowd began to celebrate when the baseline referee blew his whistle. After several seconds, the call came as a charge, and the Eagles had work to do with 41 seconds on the clock.

The Eagles again chose to defend. Fairweather blocked another shot late in the clock and the Eagles ran out in transition. Zubair Lee took a hard foul going to the rim. He made a free throw on either side of a Hood timeout to tie the score.

Both teams had leads in overtime, but Hood was up 75-73 in the final minute. Lee again went to the line with 25 seconds to play. He came into game as a 58 percent shooter from the line, but the rookie put in both to tie the game.

With five different players with multiple made 3-pointers in the game, the Blazers elected to spread the floor. Linton's basket was just the tenth made 2-pointer of the game for Hood. The Eagles ran a play for Fairweather to get a shot from mid-court, but his shot missed.

The Eagles went 14-of-29 shots in the first half and led 38-30. Both Reeves and Ward had ten points at the break. Hood was 7-of-19 from behind the arc in the first half. Chris Smalls had 14 of his team-best 22 in the first half.

"We could not take advantage of the times when they went cold," Head Coach Dan Pruessner said after the game. "They had some big stretches where they could not score and we missed opportunities with some careless turnovers and missed shots.

Both teams made 24 field goals and Eastern had a 40-to-39 edge on the glass. Lee and Ward each finished with 14.

Even with the loss, the Eagles sit in a tied with Widener for second sp
