Field Hockey Falls in MAC Commonwealth Opener

ST. DAVIDS, Pa.– Eastern University Field Hockey was unable to solve a tough Alvernia Golden Wolves defense as the Eagles dropped a 3-0 decision in the MAC Commonwealth opener for both teams.

Alvernia had scored 13 goals in the two games leading up to the league-opener. Through the game, the Eagles held the visitors to only six penalty corners, but Alvernia was able to convert chances in the run of play. The Golden Wolves scored on a cross and finish in the seventh minute and then doubled their lead late in the first half on a hard shot from the top of the circle.

The Eagles kept things close and had chances to halve the deficit, but the Alvernia defense held its ground. Lily White had the best chance for the Eagles. Alvernia goalie Lexi Boettcher stopped a quality shot by Lily White near in the final seconds of the third quarter.

The final Alvernia goal came midway through the fourth quarter on another cross and finish. Abby Agapito finished with eight saves and White had a pair of defensive saves.

"We are almost there,' Head Coach Abbey Kemble said after the match. "[We are] still chipping away, improvements are being made everyday. The final touch just needs to be there."

The Eagles (1-5, 0-1) are at Elizabethtown College for a non-league test on Wednesday and will return to MAC Commonwealth play at Hood next Saturday.
