ST. DAVIDS, Pa. - Facing a one-goal deficit after the first half of play, Eastern Women's Soccer came roaring back in the final 45 minutes to defeat Goucher College 2-1 in its home opener.
The first half was controlled by the visitors, who dominated both possession and field position despite a 7-4 shot advantage for the Eagles. The Gophers' consistent pressure resulted in an early tally, which came in the 10th minute. However, after halftime, Eastern turned the tide in their favor, generating a more aggressive attack and keeping the ball in its offensive end.
After several strong chances evaded the Eagles early in the second half, Brynn Rathsam recorded the team's first goal of the season in the 52nd minute. Off a flawless corner kick from Lindsay Kline, Rathsam headed the ball into the net, tying the contest at 1-1. Rathsam put together an excellent performance for the Eagles, leading the team with five total shots.
"It took a bit of time to get, but I was so proud of the team's response in the second half," Eastern Head Coach AJ Stueck said. "We battled for everything, and began to create and combine in the final third."
The play of the match came in the 88th minute, when Kline was fouled in the penalty box after finding some open space in front of the net. The junior captain took advantage of the opportunity, firing the ball into the upper twine to give the Eagles a lead they would not relinquish.
"Our captain Lindsay stepped up when we needed her most," Stueck said of Kline. "It takes nerves of steel to finish in that moment."
Eastern dominated offensively in the second half, outshooting Goucher 12-1. Kline, Kellie Reith, and Gabi Hollinger each finished with three shots apiece. In net, Isabella Vazquez recorded her first collegiate win, making two saves in the victory.
"The team earned this good feeling," Stueck said. "Now, we will look to use this positive energy as we had into a huge rivalry game Wednesday."
The Eagles will be back at Olson Field on Wednesday afternoon to take on Eagle Road rival Cabrini. Kickoff is set for 4:30 pm.
