Women's Basketball Falls to Stevenson

OWINGS MILLS, Md. - Eastern Women's Basketball dropped its third MAC Commonwealth contest of the season on Saturday, falling to the Stevenson Mustangs by a score of 59-46. The Mustangs, despite shooting just 29.3 percent from the field (17-of-58), shot lights out from beyond the arc, finishing nine-of-17 (52.9 percent), including six makes in their first eight attempts.

Additionally, after a close first quarter, the Eagles were outscored by 10 points in the second stanza, which allowed the Mustangs to take a double-digit lead they would not relinquish.

Eastern got off to a strong start, jumping out to an early 7-3 lead on five quick points from first-year point guard Camila Sosa, including a triple. Stevenson answered with an 8-0 run and grabbed a 15-9 lead with 2:14 remaining in the period, but baskets from Taryn Woodson and Kayla Jefferson made it a 15-13 Mustangs' advantage at the first quarter break.

After shooting 40 percent in the opening frame, the Eastern offense fell stagnant in the second quarter. The Eagles scored just six points, shooting two-of-13 from the field and being held off the scoreboard until the 3:58 mark. The Mustangs countered with 16 points, including three triples, to build its lead to 31-19 at halftime.

The Eagles continued to battle throughout the second half, cutting a 19-point deficit down to 10 in the final four minutes of play. However, back-to-back empty possessions for Eastern, followed by Stevenson's ninth three with 1:29 to play, staved off the Eagles' potential comeback attempt.

Sosa led the Eagles with 11 points, while Mikayla Wright and Ashya Gaddy each finished with 10. Woodson added eight points along with a team-leading 14 rebounds.

Eastern will return home next Saturday to take on Penn State Brandywine in its final home contest of 2021. Tip is scheduled for 1:00 pm.
