Women's Hoops to Start Tourney at DeSales

With a come-from-behind win against Misericordia University on Saturday Evening, Eastern University Women's Basketball earned a spot in this week's MAC Freedom Women's Basketball Tournament. The fourth-seeded Eagles open play at DeSales at 7 pm on Wednesday.

Coach Houston's crew will face a tough test against the top-seeded Bulldogs. DeSales finished 13-1 in the league and outscored league opponents by over 25 points per game this year. After dropping a two-point decision to King's in the second game, the Bulldogs have reeled off a dozen wins in a row.

In the first meeting between the two teams, the Eagles gave the Bulldogs perhaps their stiffest test of the second half. Eastern held a seven-point lead going into the fourth quarter. The DeSales defense stopped the Eagles cold in the fourth and held on for a 59–57 win. The Eagles had three shots in their final possession but could not get a 3-pointer to fall.

Eastern features balanced scoring through the starting five. Viki Kneis averages 9.1 points per game and has the lowest scoring average of the five starters. Minika Glenn leads the team with 13.8 points per game. IN the league, Kay Wulah is averaging 15.6 points, 10.1 rebounds, and over 2.5 blocked shots per game. Jaelyn Harris is shooting over 40 percent from behind the arc in the games in conference. Da'Naziah Brown  averages nine points and nearly seven rebounds a game while handling most of the ball-handling duties. Brown came up with a huge steal and a score to help the Eagles gain the lead in their win against second-seeded Misericordia on Saturday.

The Bulldogs also rely on balance. Avery Jordan, Samantha Shinkus, and Rylie Rittenhouse all average over 12 points per game. The Bulldogs have five players averaging at least one made 3-pointers a game in the league, but Shinkus leads them in that category with 18. They have taken more than 100 more free throws than their opponents.

The winner of Wednesday's game in Center Valley will face the winner of the game between Misericordia and King's. Eastern split with both those teams during the regular season. The Championship game will be on Saturday.

As it is a MAC Championship event, Admission will be charged. It will be $6 for Adults, $4 for seniors and $2 for students.
