Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse |

Men's Lacrosse Stopped by No. 7 York in Opener

ST. DAVIDS, Pa.– Eastern University Men's Lacrosse got off to a slow start and was unable to recover in an 11-3 loss to the No. 7 York College Spartans (2-0). York scored five times in the first nine minutes and built a 6-1 edge by the end of the first quarter. Connor Killion and Colin Piper each had a goal and an assist for the Eagles.

How It Happened:
Though Eastern won the opening faceoff, the Spartans grabbed a 1-0 lead in the fourth minute after an Eastern turnover. Only seconds later, York took advantage of a faceoff win for a 2-0 lead. Another Eastern turnover gave the Spartans an additional possession and Chandler Schmidt took advantage with his second goal of the day.

Killion scored on a tough shot under pressure in the alley with eight minutes to play, and the Eagles had two shots to close the gap to 3-2 after Brian Casey won another faceoff. York goalie jack Michael made the save on Eastern's second shot and the Spartans were able to bump the lead to 4-1 with seven minutes left in the frame on a transition goal. The Spartans pushed the lead to 6-1 fifty seconds later.

While York scored with 1:12 to play in the first and early in the second, the Eastern defense settled in and the Eagles began to extend possessions on offense through the rest of the first half. York had a 19-4 edge in first-quarter shots and a 9-3 edge in second quarter attempts.

York had a 20-18 edge in shots after halftime. Piper scored from Killion with five minutes to play in the third before the Spartans added an eighth goal late in the third after a man-up chance ended. The York lead grew to 9-2 on a man-up goal early in the fourth. The Spartans added two more on an unsettled situation and a man-up goal before Kyle Fanelli dunked in a pass from Piper on the doorstep.

Chris Durning had seven ground balls and three caused turnovers. Kyran Baker caused four. The Eastern faceoff men won 9-of-16 at the X. Brian Casey won 5-of-10 and Ahthony Firmani won 4-of-6. Adam Grant made 14 stops in his first career start in goal.

Coach Wallace Says:
"We came out way to slow against a high-powered offense like York. We settled in and played good six-on-six defense after the first quarter. Offensively they didn't let us get comfortable and we didn't adjust like we need to."

Up Next:
The Eagles have a week to work before hosting Haverford on Olson Field next Saturday at noon.
