Softball Drops Two Tight Games at FDU-Florham

MADISON, N.J.– Eastern University Softball dropped a pair of seven-inning games at FDU-Florham. The Eagles out-hit the Devils 10-6 in the opener but fell 7-3 as the hosts put together a five-run fourth inning. The Eagles scored first in the nightcap, but fell 5-1 as the Devils (7-14, 4-4) put together a three-run fifth that proved to be the difference.

How It Happened:
After the Devils grabbed a run in the bottom of the first, Eastern manufactured a run int he top of the second. Taylor Crown reached on an infield single and moved to second on a Lexi Evelyn sacrifice bunt. Rebecca Howard delivered a one-out double. to tie the game.

The score stayed tied until the fourth. After a pair of one-out walks, the Devils built a five-run rally against Evelyn. She escaped the jam with a bases-loaded pop-up and a strike out.

The Eagles grabbed two back int he top of the sixth. After Crown reached on an error, she moved to second on a bunt. After Howard walked, Jess Snader bunted for a single to load the bases. Catelynn Erickson and Sam Albertson delivered back-to-back singles to drive in two runs, but the rally ended when Sami Britton lined out to center. The Devils grabbed a run on two hits in the bottom of the inning to stretch the lead back to 7-3.

Albertson had three hits in the game.

The Eastern bats were quiet in the nightcap until Britton led off the fourth with a double to left. Sabrina Thomas moved her over with a bunt after Emily Loomis smacked a line drive right at the first baseman. Britton scored when Taylor Crown reached on an error.

The Devils tied the game on a squeeze play int he fourth and took the lead on three runs in the bottom of the fifth.

Coach Birchmeier Says:
"When we are smacking the ball, we're hitting it right to people. If we keep hitting it hard, we're gonna find gaps. I was very happy with Sami Britton in the circle and Catelynn Erickson as our DP today. We got the majority of our bunts down and made them work. We are on the right path."

The Eagles are at Neumann on Tuesday.
