Buhrman Brace Lifts Eagles in Rain at Del Val

DOYLESTOWN, Pa.– Derek Buhrman scored a pair of first-half goals and Eastern University Men's Soccer remained unbeaten in atop the MAC Freedom with a 3-0 win in a driving rain at Delaware Valley University.

How It Happened:
With the Aggies (5-8-1, 0-3) starting the match in a defensive shell, the Eagles (7-7-1, 3-0) needed an early goal to unlock the game. In the tenth minute, Julio Ardon found a seam and played Buhrman into space. The rookie forward collected the pass behind the Aggie defense and slipped home a left-footed shot for an early edge.

Fifteen minutes later, Buhrman scored on nearly the same play. Sam Sutherland provided the service from ten yards further back, but Buhrman slipped another left-footed shot in for a 2-0 lead and his fifth of the year.

The Eastern defense did not allow a shot on frame in the opening half. Kasper Zaba-Poplawski nearly stretched the lead to 3-0 in the 42nd minute. He made a good near-post run and volleyed a cross from Reginald Lloyd toward goal from six yards out. Somehow, Delaware Valley goalkeeper Josh Jarrett parried the shot away.

The third Eastern goal finally came after half. After a run up the right flank by Jared Whitehorn, Nik Kokolios picked up a loose ball and cut his way into the box. His left-footed strike slipped inside the far post for the final margin.

The Eagles finished with an 11-1 edge in total shots and a 2-1 advantage in corners.

Dylan Smith started the match and picked up the win in goal. Riley Porter finished the match on the field for the Eagles.

With nine points through three matches, the Eagles sit atop the MAC Freedom standings. All three other matches in the league happen tonight.

Coach Payne Says:
"Overall, a good performance and result for our program. The ain and wind made the match difficult. I thought we handled that pretty well. We had good control of the game and had moments of possession in our opponent's half. We had several times where we won the ball back quickly in good areas on the field. I think this match will provide good film to continue to go over our attacking shape and movement as well as maintaining good shape so we don't get exposed to the counter. "

"Derek was able to get two goals today. That is four in his last three games. That is the kind of production we need from our starting central forward in order to be successful. I really loved that we were able to play everybody in today's match. We love it when everyone can play and contribute on the field."

Up Next:
The Eagles have a chance to take another important step toward the post-season with a 3:00 pm match at Wilkes on Saturday.
