SWARTHMORE, Pa.– For the third time in the last five days, Eastern University Men's Soccer played extra time in a match. Today, however, the Eagles found a
Sam Sutherland game-winner in the 93rd minute for a 1-0 win over the host Swarthmore College Garnet (3-2).
The win came as a big relief after the Eagles fell on a 94th minute penalty kick at home on Saturday and in the 95th minute in a neutral-site game against Wesleyan on Sunday.
How it Happened:
The Garnet had an 18-4 edge in shots through regulation, and the Eagles did not put a shot on target through 90 minutes.
Ben Lochstampfor made all of his five saves in regulation to earn his second career shutout.
The Eagles finally put a shot on frame in extra time.
Colin Furlong played the roll of provider.. The senior midfielder served a ball from the left side, and
Jake Sankey directed it back across the face of goal where Sutherland was in position to stuff home his second of the year.
Coach Payne Says:
"We were very flat tonight. We came out the first 15 to 20 minutes looking pretty good.We found our wingers isolated in good situations and we were playing in Swarthmore's half. But as the game grew longer it look like we had some tired legs and maybe some fatigue of some players that have been on a lot of minutes from the weekend. We tried to manage that as best as we could."
"We were probably outplayed for the majority of the night, but we did a good job of making some key tackles and taking care of our box on set pieces.
"Swarthmore had a good game plan and executed well. We have been in that spot and it is a tough place to be. The margin between winning and losing is really small. We could be 5-0, but we could also be 1-4."
"Four out of the five teams we played so far have played with two forwards. I think we will be better for playing in these matches and against these team shapes. I think our staff knows what we want to do with our team going forward as we continue getting closer to conference play. My hope is that this continues to give guys belief in tight games."
